I never imagined that I would ever take part in a MUN (Model United Nations), so it really surprised me when I said yes to an invitation to BYMUN - not just a normal MUN, but one that includes us debating in both English and Chinese.

That marked the start of my 3 year journey with BYMUN - from delegate of Philippines in ASEAN+3 Beginners’ Council, to a admin secretariat, and final to become the admin academic advisor, I’ve truly come a long way in this entire MUN journey.

I remember shaking when I made my opening speech - speaking in front of a group of strangers has never been my forte. As the days went by, I found myself expressing my thoughts with increasing confidence, and really sitting into the role of Philippines.

MUN allowed me to think from a bigger perspective to attempt to solve complex issues - we discussed the Rohingya crisis, as well as economic stability within ASEAN - and yet keep in mind that I had to protect my representing country’s interest. Looking back at it now, I really admire the politicians that represent Singapore while working through complicated global relations, especially trying to balance both our relationship with China and the US.

Although I can’t say I’ve fallen in love with MUNs, I think it was a truly refreshing experience delegating, and then being part of the planning team.
