NYCO was a natural extension of my interest in music. When I was a baby, my room was where the piano was, and hence I grew up listening to my brothers play the piano. By age 13, I have been playing the piano for more than 10 years. In NYGH, I then moved on from learning western music to broadening my perspectives by practising Chinese music. From then, I picked up the Chinese flute and played in the orchestra with other dedicated musicians.
My favourite part of NYCO was definitely the feeling of playing with a group of musicians. The piano, though can be played with others in duets, is still quite an individual instrument. Being in NYCO gave me the chance to experience what it is like playing in a team. On one hand, the complexity and depth of sound is definitely increased when there are multiple musicians instead of a single one, but I think what was more refreshing was the feeling of knowing that others have your back, and are playing to their best so that everyone can sound their best. That feeling of everyone coming together to achieve something that has no real tangible impacts was truly something that really touched me.
Along with the rest of the orchestra, I picked up a new instrument, played in multiple school concerts, and also performed with the orchestra to achieve a Distinction in SYF 2019.
